About Just Chasing Fireflies Photography

Heather Peatman, of Just Chasing Fireflies Photography skijoring with her two dogs along a snowy Vermont trail

Hi, I’m Heather, the photographer behind Just Chasing Fireflies.

If you’ve ever tried to capture your dog’s goofy grin or your horse’s wind-tossed mane, you already know that magic can’t be staged, it has to be chased. That’s what I do: chase the fleeting, honest moments between you and the animals you love most. Oh yeah, and I also cover human things too- like portraits, weddings, and couples through the years!

Capturing light, feelings &  moments and all the things in between people and lifE

Me personally? I'm athletic, adventerous, quirky, nerdy, weird, and down to earth. I have a small farm with my husband and young daughter where we raise all manner of critter (but primarily sheep). I greatly enjoy participating in both canine and equine sports/events and I love exploring New England. My ADHD self has dabbled in more hobbies than I care to admit!

What's with that long name?

Ever catch Lightning Bugs as a kid and try to put them in a jar? It's a childhood feeling of wonder, running barefoot through a summer field trying to catch light. Except, the next morning it's not the same, you can't hold onto those illuminous creatures or their light. You can chase it, but you can't ever fully catch them. It’s a reminder that the most beautiful things aren’t meant to be held still. That philosophy runs through every session I shoot: I focus on connection over posing, play over perfection, and authenticity over aesthetics. Whether it’s a golden hour portrait, a quiet moment between horse and rider, or a family photo where the dog definitely steals the show, I’m there for the real story. Like me, my sessions can be full of adventure and just going with the flow.

My style and approach

My photography style is natural, warm, and true-to-life, the kind that still feels like you years from now. I use Vermont’s stunning landscapes as a backdrop, and I make sure every session feels relaxed and fun (because stress shows up in photos). I run a judgement free zone, because everyone deserves a moment in the spotlight!

For dogs, we’ll let them sniff, play, and just be themselves. For horses, I work with your animal’s comfort and personality, because every horse deserves to shine without pressure. For kids, well... I'll follow them around with silly faces and capture whatever comes our way. As a parent to a little and experienced owning both dogs and horses I've learned quickly the best approach is to go with the flow.

Based in Vermont - Serving New England & Upstate New York

I’m based in Vermont and photograph throughout the region, from cozy family sessions in open fields to equestrian events and dog sports. If you’re in New England, or just across the lake in New York, and looking for portraits that celebrate your bond with your animals, I’d be honored to tell your story.
